THREE LEGS CHALLENGE

image

A lovely morning – very well done to the 12 Beavers who turned out for the walk this morning, and well done and thank you to all the parents and family members who joined us for the walk – we do appreciate it, and I think the Beavers love having you along! We were able to award some Three Leg Challenge Badges for those Beavers and Leaders who have completed all three walks, so well done to Charlotte, Corben, Evan, James and Samson – you have now walked the entire length of the Heritage Trail!

MOVING ON to CUBS

image
It is always a sad time when we say goodbye to Beavers, as they Move On to Cubs. These four have had a fantastic journey through Scouting already, and it has been lovely watching them grow in height and confidence!! Patrick has been with us the longest, arriving with his dad in March 2015 – it has to be said – not always easy having your parent as your Beaver Leader – you have to be extra well behaved and turn up to everything!! Good luck to you all as you continue your adventures in Scouting – Patrick, Vinnie, Sean and Jack.

LODGE POINTS

image
Well done AGAIN to Yellow Lodge who won the Lodge Points Trophy this Term. Excellent work guys – and considering you only have four in your Lodge rather than five, and points are gained from attendance (amongst other things), that is really good going. Very well done!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH STUDENT

image
Thanks to Robyn, our 13 year old Duke of Edinburgh student who joined us for a 3 month placement this term, and helped us out with a dance activity for the Beavers. We were very impressed with Robyn’s commitment and thought it would be nice to present her with a 2nd Onchan Group scarf to remember us by.  We wish her all the very best.

ST GEORGE’S DAY PARADE & SERVICE 2017

image
Thank you to those Beavers and their parents who were at the St George’s Parade and Service, and special thanks to Dylan and Corben for their part in the Service – you both did really well. Also well done to Sean for carrying the Beaver Flag, and James for carrying our St George’s Flag! You all did really well.

Thursday beavers – March

RNIB

image
Another brilliant night at the Manx Blind Welfare Society. We delivered our stamps, definitely more than last time and all carefully sorted by the Clyne Family – thank you guys! What a lot of gadgets and pieces of equipment we had to play with?! There was even a game of chess going on……. Well done Beavers, all well behaved, lots of good questions too. Remember to keep a look out for the white sticks, and tell your family what the red marks on white sticks mean!

COMMUNICATORS BADGE

On their recent visit to the Post Office, the Beavers were given some postcards to send out. This was brilliant timing, as we had been working on our Communicators Badge. We thought it would be nice to send a card to our new UK Chief Commissioner – Tim Kidd, and we were delighted to receive a message back!

CHIEF SCOUT’S BRONZE AWARDS

image

Very well done to CM and Sean for completing their CSBA. This is the highest Award to be gained at Beavers, and can be worn throughout Cubs. This Award is gained by getting all six of your Challenge Badges. It has taken CM and Sean nearly two years to achieve this, so really well done to you both.

CLIMBING

image
Thursday Beavers had a great night learning some of the skills, equipment and safety aspects of climbing. Our Island Commissioner – Guy Thompson joined us for the evening, and showed the Beavers how to fit harnesses, he explained the importance of safety helmets, and we also had a few practice scenario climbs -along the floor!!

Thursday Beavers – February 2017

POST OFFICE – SORTING OFFICE

image

A great visit to the Post Office – Sorting Office in the Springfield Valley Industrial Park. The Beavers were very excited to be shown round and learnt lots of new things about our letters and parcels, and how they get to sorted and eventually make their way to our letterboxes.

POLICE HQ

image

An exciting visit to the Police Headquarters this evening. The Beavers got to try on some of the hats and jackets, learnt about the radios, visited the cells, took fingerprints, tried handcuffs, and got the chance to look inside a police car and van. Thanks again to Rachel Kelly for organising this, and the Police Youth members for making us welcome.

INVESTITURES

image

Investitures are one of the best things about Scouting – particularly with Beavers – it is the start of hopefully, a great adventure. Our four new Beavers were very excited and they recited their Promise perfectly! They were then presented with their 2nd Onchan scarf, badges & Investiture Certificate. So a warm welcome & congratulations to Ned, Sam S, Fynlo and Sam C, we hope you enjoy your time in Thursday Beavers!

Thursday Beavers–Football Champions

image
We are really proud of both of our teams who worked hard and stayed focused, so well done – CM, Patrick, James, Sean & Vinnie – our new champions, and well done to Corben, Sam C, Jack, Evan & Fynlo!
Jack also found time and energy to win the penalty shootout competition, duly noted for next year!!

A big thank you to Rachel Kelly who helped us out with coaching, her traditional pre-final team talk and refereeing a number of games. Rachel has been a great help to 2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers over the last couple of years, and we hope she will continue to help us out from time to time – so as a ’thank you’ – we thought it would be nice to present Rachel with a 2nd Onchan Group scarf.

Time to Return Trophies

image

It’s time to return any trophies which are given out at last years Awards Night. We ask that they are returned early as it sometimes takes quite a while to get them all back in!

Those who were presented a Beaver Scout Trophy or a Best Cub Scout trophy, these can be kept (for ever).

Summer Term Subs Due

image

Subs are now due for the up coming term. Subs Forms can be downloaded from this website or can be found at the Scout Hall.

We would be grateful if parents can make sure their child’s subs are paid no later than the 15. May 2017.

You will also find our Activity Wear Order Form attached to the download.

2nd Onchan Achieve their Swimming Badges

imageOn 8 April 2017 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from 2nd Onchan Scout Group had the opportunity to complete one of the staged swimmer badges from levels 1 to 5.

The Group were able to hire out Ballakermeen Swimming Pool for the afternoon and using staggered start times the Scouts could pick which level they wanted to go for and turn up at the applicable time. There were lots of members going for every stage of the badges with 3 Scouts going for the gruelling Stage 5 which included a 1,000 metre timed swim using 4 different strokes, 5 minutes treading water with one arm in the air for 3 minutes and a swim in additional clothing.

All Beavers, Cubs and Scouts successfully achieved the level that they individually went for with enough time at the end for some water polo and some fun with the floats and other pool equipment. Well done all!

A big ‘Thank You’ to Alex, Ash, Dan and Rob for running the sessions and to Macklin our lifeguard.

New Toilets & New Roof

image

The Group is looking at a carrying out some major works to our Scout Hall in the near future. Subject to Planning and Building Regulation approval, we intend to demolish the existing boy’s toilet and build a new toilet block creating two new toilets. One toilet will be fully disabled accessible, whilst the other will also incorporate a shower and a cleaner’s store. The entrance to the Scout Hall will be increased in size and the outside area will be improved.

The building currently has various different flat roof levels and we intend to roof over all of these and create just one sloping roof going from the main hall into the old building.

At the moment we have yet to have  the job priced, but it wont be cheap, we will be looking lots of fundraising over the next year or so, once we have planning and building control approvals.

St. George’s Day Parade

The annual St. George’s Day Parade & Service is taking place on Sunday 23. April 2017 in Castletown. This is the only time all members of the Scout Association from around the Island get together and during the Service everyone will be renewing their Promise to Scouting.

It’s important we get a smart turnout from 2nd Onchan, as the Isle of Man’s largest Scout Group we will be expected to have the largest presence on the parade.

Letters should be going out from Section Leaders but you can also download one here.
