Beavers Pony Trekking

image

At the weekend Thursday and Tuesday Beavers went Pony Trekking at the Ballahimmin Pony Trekking Centre in Cronk y Voddy. Sixteen Beavers and three of the Leaders’ children took part in the Pony Trekking, situated in the beautiful Little London hills – and the weather was perfect! The Centre is run by a parent of one of Thursday Beaver’s – Bryony Collison. Bryony organised the Beavers into two groups – one to go out riding and one to stay and learn about grooming and care of the ponies.

Tuesday Beavers went out first, most of the boys were novices and had never ridden before, but they all looked very confident on their ponies and all seemed to enjoy the experience. Next out were Thursday Beavers, and despite a few early nerves, the Beavers soon settled down and enjoyed their trek. It was a fantastic morning. The staff at the Centre were amazing and helped to make the experience a positive one for all involved.

Thursday & Tuesday Beavers – Island Ten Pin Bowling Competition

image

Over the weekend, Island Beavers took part in a Ten Pin Bowling Competition at Sure Strike Bowling & Leisure Centre in Ramsey. This was the first time the event had taken place in over four years, and 2nd Onchan were the last winners of the trophy – so the pressure was on! There were individual trophies for the Best Beaver – Under 7 and the Best Beaver 7 & Over. There was also a Colony trophy for the highest average score per Colony.

imageEleven Thursday Beavers and 8 Tuesday Beavers took part in the competition. The boys did brilliantly and really enjoyed the morning. Harrison C from Tuesday won the Under 7 trophy with a massive score of 79 – Well Done! Oscar N from Thursday came 2nd in the same category with a score of 74. James H from Tuesday was 3rd in the 7 & under age group, scoring 81 points, and Thomas B from Thursday came 4th with a score of 80 – well done boys!

The overall winner of the trophy – the Colony with the highest average score – was 2nd Onchan TUESDAY Beavers!! Well Done! Their average score was 70.43. Thursday Beavers came 2nd overall with an average score of 65.54. Well done to everyone who took part.

Beavers Christmas

image

Tuesday and Thursday Beavers finished their year with a joint Christmas Party held at the Fun Farm in Onchan. Over thirty Beavers joined in the fun and food! We would like to thank all our young helpers for their continued commitment and help imagethis year – you make our job a lot easier. We would also like to thank all the parents for their support and help over the year, it is always very much appreciated. Lastly we would like to wish all our Beavers and their families a very happy Christmas and a joyful New Year. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2013 for some more Scouting fun!

Beavers Moving On

image

Thursday Beavers have reached the end of yet another term – which means it is time to say goodbye to some of our older Beavers who have reached the age of 8 and are ready to move on to Cubs. James C. Ben W. Alexander G. Vannin C. Torin S. and Adam D. all received their Moving On certificate and badges, and are all going to Manannan Cubs. We have really enjoyed having the boys in Beavers. They have all been well behaved and enthusiastic and we will miss them, but wish them all the very best at Cubs.

Beavers Football Competition

image

2nd Onchan Thursday & Tuesday Beavers recently took part in the Island Beaver 5-A-Side Football Competition. A total of 9 teams entered, including two from 2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers and one from 2nd Onchan Tuesday Beavers. The teams were divided into two leagues, and then played all the other teams in their league. Tuesday Beavers got off to a fantastic start and were top of the leader board in league 1 after two matches. They got piped into second place by one of the 1st Douglas teams. The Thursday Beavers B Team (Oscar L, Oscar N, Stephen H, Charlie M, Ashton Q, James H, Kian L and Luke A) also played in this league, but despite some brilliant matches, finished a bit further down the table.

imageThursday Beavers A Team didn’t get off to a great start in league 2, drawing their first game and only getting 1 point. After a pep talk from Lee they picked up for their next few games, and despite some anxious times, they finished top of the leader board! Before the final took place between the winners of league 1 and 2, there was a penalty shoot out competition against two of our referees – 2nd Onchan helpers Chris and Sam. All the Beavers had the opportunity to take part and were eliminated from the shoot out if they failed to score. The last surviving Beaver – who scored the last penalty, was 2nd Onchan Thursday Beaver – James H. Well done James!!

There was much excitement as the final commenced between 2nd Onchan Thursday A Team (Ben W, Aaron C, Bradley K, Alexander G, Vannin C and Ryan E) and 1st Douglas. The game finished with a 1-1 draw and then went into extra time. Aaron C of 2nd Onchan Thursday Beavers scored the winning goal in the closing minutes – much to the delight of the whole of 2nd Onchan!! Very well done boys – they showed great focus and determination. Needless to say Lee was one very happy coach!!

Thanks to all the parents for supporting this event, but special thanks to Chris and Sam who were referees and match advisors and a real credit to 2nd Onchan!

Beavers Sleepover

image

Seven Tuesday Beavers and fourteen Thursday Beavers met on Friday night for a Sleepover / Movie Night at the Scout Hall. All the Beavers were very, very excited – for some it was their first night away from home. We started the evening with some games followed by juice and biscuits. Then it was time to get ready for the movie! We just about managed to fit twenty-one Beavers along the side wall, so they all had a good view of the film. Once they were in their PJs, the snacks came out and the movie started. There were numerous visits to the kitchen for juice and hot chocolate, followed by numerous visits to the bathroom! At 10.30pm it was time for bed, and after half an hour most of the Beavers began to settle down and some were even asleep! It was just after midnight when the last Beaver fell asleep and about 4.10am when the first Beaver woke! Luckily it was just a bathroom visit and all was quietish again (apart from the fidgeting and coughing) until 6.30am! Not a single tear was shed and no-one asked to go home (apart from our senior Leader!) – making the evening a resounding success. Thanks to all the Leaders and special thanks to Chris, Aaron and Ellen for all your help too. Thanks also to Phoenix Scouts for letting us use the hall on their Troop Night. Well done to ALL the Beavers who took part in the Sleepover / Movie Night.

Beavers Diamond Challenge

image

This year we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and to mark the occasion each Colony on the Island was given a D-I-A-M-O-N-D Challenge – to take part in seven different activities which spelt out the word DIAMOND.  Thursday Beavers visited Douglas Fire Station, completed the Imagination Badge, made paper Aeroplanes, made Mother’s Day cards, visited Onchan Library, welcomed New Beavers and made handprint/poem for Dads. We were the fourth Colony to complete the challenge and had a great time in the process.  The Island Beaver Leader – Big Beaver – came to our meeting to present us with a trophy and there were certificates for all the Beavers too!
