Scouts from both the Moddey Dhoo and Phoenix Scout Troops and the Onchan Explorers are working this week with other Island Scouts on the Scoreboards during the TT Races. Saturday went well with just a short delay, but long delays on Monday meant that we didn’t finish until after 8pm. Well done to all the Scouts involved. Two more days racing to go.
Ten Scouts from the Phoenix Troop took part in a Kayak Training weekend at Mooragh Park, Ramsey over the 26. – 27. May 2012. The aim of the weekend was to gain the Scout Canoeist Activity Badge. It was warm and sunny on both days, which was a bonus. On Sunday afternoon, the Scouts were tested and all managed to pass the requirements of the Badge. well done to all who took part. Thanks also go to 1st Ramsey for the use of their Scout Hall and Kayaks and the Venture Centre who let us use the lake.
The Scout Passes for the TT Scoreboards have now arrived and will be sent out to Scouts of both the Moddey Dhoo and Phoenix Scout Troops over the next week. The Scout Association had a very large request for passes this year and with the reduced number of Scouts needed, most Scouts will find they are only required on one day out of the four. The organisers had a choice of giving every Scout a day on the Scoreboard, or having just one out of every four who applied being able to attend each race day, with the other three missing out completely, they chose the former.
The 2012 Island Scout Camp is taking place over the 29. June – 1. July 2012 and will be based at the Crossags Camp Site, Ramsey. All Island Scouts and Explorer Scouts will hopefully be attending the camp and taking part in a wide range of activities. It would be great if we can get every Scout from 2nd Onchan joining in as well. Below you will find a Letter, Medical Form and Kit List for the Camp. Permission Slips and completed Medical Forms together with the Camp Fee need to be returned by the 15. June 2012.
Last week the Scouts in the Phoenix Troop tie dyed their own T-Shirts. Last night some of them remembered to bring them back so we could have a look a choose the best one. In the end we gave out prizes to the best four shirts.
This Weekend Course is available to Scouts from the both the Moddey Dhoo Troop and the Phoenix Troop who would like to gain their Canoeist Activity Award or for those who already have the Canoeist Activity Award they can go for the Activity Plus. The course is being run at Mooragh Park, Ramsey, on the 26. – 27. May 2012. We will be using 1st Ramsey Scout Groups Headquarters, in Shipyard Road, for overnight accommodation.

A couple of months ago, members of the Phoenix Troop planted 61 trees around Watertrough Cottage as part of the Woodlands Trust Diamond Jubilee Woods Project. As far as we know this was the only planting undertook on the Isle of Man by a Group. The record of the planting has been recorded in the official Woodland Register and you can see a map of the Woodlands here.
Nine Scouts and two Leaders from the Phoenix Scout Troop stayed overnight at Watertrough Cottage on the 24. February 2012. Watertrough Cottage is the Group’s Bunkhouse located in South Barrule Plantation. The Scouts used Volcano Kettles had a Wide Game and did a Night Hike before supper and a good nights sleep. On Saturday morning after breakfast the Scouts planted 40 trees around the cottage, including Cherry, Apple, Rowan, Birch and a Royal Oak, all provided by the Woodlands Trust in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Scouts in the Phoenix Troop were tasked to bring along to their Scout Meeting on Friday 17. February 2012, a machine that they have designed and built and capable of being blown along the length of the Scout Hall by an industrial fan kindly provided by Ace Hire & Sales. A wide variety of different machines were bought in by the Scouts. Each machine was given two attempts to go as far as possible along the scout Hall floor, blown by the fan, then the Scouts were given 15 minutes to modify their machines as they wished, before a further two runs took place. Winner of all four runs was Joe B. with his wind machine made out of cereal packets. The winner of the Leaders choice for innovative design when to Joel W, with his tiny little Wind Machine, which included a propeller that didn’t actually do anything. The final prize went to Thomas C, as his design looked a little like a pirate ship and the Leaders liked that.
