Manannan Cubs at Ardwhallan

Over the weekend 21st – 23rd October 2016, 12 cubs from the Manannan Pack embarked on our annual camp to Ardwhallan Outdoor Pursuits Centre in East Baldwin. On the first night all Cubs were very excitable and in a vain effort to tire them before bed the first activity of the camp was a hike up to St. Luke’s church to play some manhunt games.

After an hour of running around in the dark everyone seemed suitably tired so we headed back to the Ardwhallan site, where Mark had prepared a fire and hot chocolate in the viking-style longhouse to warm everyone up.

The next morning Cubs were woken up at 7:30am for breakfast, as they had a busy day ahead of them and we needed to start early. For the first part of the day Cubs were split into two groups and took part in either backwoods cooking (cooking bread twists & chocolate bananas on an open fire) or orienteering, before swapping activities later on.

After stopping for a gourmet lunch of pasty and spaghetti hoops Cubs stayed in their groups for the first of the afternoon’s activities, which were a blindfold trail/team games and the low ropes course. Everyone competed fiercely in both activities to gain all-important points which would be added to their total score for the weekend.

Cubs then had a brief juice & biscuits break before taking part in a treasure hunt, where they competed for individual glory rather than team points. Cubs were tasked with finding as many lollipop sticks they could that had been hidden around the site half an hour earlier. During this activity we had a quick visit from Top Gear star Matt Le Blanc, but unfortunately he couldn’t stay for long – and none of the Cubs recognised him anyway, making the leaders feel old.

After the results of the treasure hunt had been counted it was time for the assault course, a test of balance, skill and the ability to crawl through thick mud. After a practice run, then a timed run which counted towards their points, the Cubs lined up for a third go with a nice surprise at the end…

It was then time for dinner (which hardly saw the plate) before a few more outdoor games, during which there was a spectacular meteor shower for anyone who wasn’t chasing around trying to grab glow sticks. There was then just enough time for hot chocolate and a couple of movies, after which some Cubs were so tired they had to be carried upstairs to bed because they’d already fallen asleep (which doesn’t happen very often!!).

The next morning saw a delicious breakfast of bacon baps & toast before heading to Nobles Park in the minibus for a run around, and a swimming session at the NSC to substitute for all the showers that were missed over the weekend.

There was then only time to head back to Ardwhallan to pack away & tidy up before a quick lunch of pizza and hotdogs. After this Cubs were taken home… apart from some with far too much energy who then went to compete in football matches straight after the camp.

Manannan Cubs @ Malew March 2016

image

Over the weekend 18th – 20th March 2016, Manannan Cub pack held a weekends Cub Camp at 1st Malew Scout Hall.  We all met on Friday at the Scout Hall and after dropping of the bags in the Scout Hall, we walked to Polsoum Park in Castletown along the millennium way.  Once we had arrived at the park, we played a few games in the park and played a game on man hunt.  It was getting late, so we hiked back for hot chocolate and a late film which finished around 12.00.  It was then time for bed and after a few hours most of the Cubs were asleep.

On Saturday we were up early for breakfast, we had time to play football and cricket in the local primary school before heading to Laser Mayhem for the mornings activities.  Once we had arrived at Laser Mayhem we split into 2 teams for the morning, the winning team was the Blues (4-3), everyone had a great time and the Leaders also joined in the activity as well.  After we had ran through the plantation, shooting our team mates with the laser guns it was time for lunch, everyone was glad to sit down and have a peaceful lunch.  We had time to do some bivouac building in the plantation, and split into 3 times to make some bivouacs, all the Cubs did really well with this.  In the afternoon we headed to the NSC for a couple of hours of swimming, even after the swimming some of the cubs were still not clean, however they had a good time in the pool.  It was time for dinner so we headed to McDonalds which went down very well with the Cubs.  In the evening we played some games at the Scout Hall before settling down for a movie, all the Cubs were asleep by 10.30pm so the Leaders were able to get a decent night’s sleep too.

Sunday was another early start for the leaders and the cubs, after Ruby & Lola (Akela’s Dogs) had woken everyone up, it was time for breakfast and packing up the gear.  After we had breakfast we travelled to Archallagan for a morning of Orienteering & Geocaching, we managed to find a few orienteering markers but no success in the geocaches, however the Cubs had a good morning.  We had lunch at the local school before heading back for a game on non-stop cricket before heading home for the day.

This camp was a success and the comments from parents always help, I would like to thank the Leaders for the help during the weekend (Rob, Dan & Mark).  The weather was dry which helped with the activities and we had a good bunch of kids what more can we ask for.

Manannan Pack at Ardwhallan

image

Over the weekend 14th – 16th November, the 2nd Onchan Manannan Cub pack held their Cub Camp at Ardwhallan Outdoor Pursuits Centre in West Baldwin.  The theme for the entire weekend was the Simpsons and once the Cubs were split into Groups and also shown where they would be sleeping it was time for the first activity, a night hike up to St Luke’s Church, it was a lovely clear night and it didn’t take that long to hike up to the Church.  Once up at the church the Cubs worked in their Groups and did a treasure hunt around the grounds of the church before heading up the hill for a small fireworks display to start the Cub Camp in style.

imageAfter the display it was a very quick walk back to Ardwhallan for cake and juice before the Cubs were tasked to find as many lollypop sticks around the grounds of Ardwhallan as they could (there were about 200 scattered around). Once the majority of lollypop sticks were found we had a camp fire in the Viking Longhouse and toasted marshmallows around the fire, all the Cubs told a joke around the fire and a couple of the Cubs told us some really scary ghost stories.  It was getting late, so we headed back to Ardwhallan for Supper before going to bed, the last of the Cubs finally got to sleep around 3am (much to Akela’s delight).

imageOn Saturday it was an early start for the Leaders, however most of the Cubs were still asleep even by 7.30am, so a wakeup call was needed for some of the Cubs, after breakfast & inspection the Cubs were split up into their Groups to do the following activities; backwoods cooking, archery & low ropes / cheese crane.  For the backwoods cooking Guy Thompson (Island Commissioner) visited us and showed and assisted the Cubs in showing us how to skin and prepare Rabbits, the Cubs really got involved with this and really enjoyed this activity, we also had a chicken and a duck as well, the Cubs made a Rabbit, Duck and Chicken stew and this would form part of Saturday’s dinner.  The Archery was another activity the Cubs loved, working with Akela and Dan the Cubs all shot as many arrows as they could and tried to score as many points as they could, to make the activity more enjoyable the Cubs were tasked to blow up their balloon and try to shoot it.  The final activity for the morning was the Low Ropes and cheese crane, all Cubs had to navigate their way around the low ropes without falling off and then they had to work as part of a team on the cheese crane.

imageIt was then time for lunch and a break, for lunch it was pasty and baked beans which went down very well with all the Cubs, after lunch the Cubs were split into 2 Groups, one of the groups did some orienteering around Ardwhallan and the other group worked on the Challenge Bases around the grounds of Ardwhallan, after the hour had passed we swapped round so all Cubs had a go on each activity.  It was then time for the final activity of the day, the assault course, the Cubs were split into pairs and had to race each other and to try and get the fastest time around the assault course, all Cubs did really well and enjoyed this activity and there was some really fast Cubs going round the assault course.

As it was approaching dinner time, the Cubs made their way inside for dinner of Stew & Spaghetti Bolognaise (most of the Cubs tried the stew and some even had seconds).  After dinner the Cubs settled down to watch a couple of films before heading off to bed.  It was quite an early night for the Cubs and Leaders which is a rarity (however this was a good thing).

imageThe next morning was an early start again for the Leaders and some Cubs as they were wide awake, however the smell of bacon through the house enticed some of the Cubs to wake  and make their way down for breakfast, after inspection the Cubs and Leaders went for a very quick walk to the reservoir and the Cubs had great fun sliding down the bank near the reservoir, after 30 minutes around the reservoir we walked back to Ardwhallan and played some man hunt games before doing a very wet assault course, all Cubs and Leaders got soaked but had a really great time.  After everyone had done a few trips on a very wet assault course everyone got changed and packed their gear away and then it was time for lunch and a debrief before playing a game of Danish Longball and then it was time to head home.

The weekend was a great success and all Cubs had a great time, the weather remained dry for us which also helped towards the weekend.  Thanks to all those Leaders who helped during the weekend and to Guy for helping in the Backwoods Cooking.

A busy weekend for 2nd Onchan Cubs

image

This weekend Cubs from both Packs were kept very busy. On Saturday some Cubs along with some Leaders were in Onchan Shoprite bag packing to help raise funds for island Cub events. They raised £400 throughout the day. The Cubs did really well at packing the shopping and managed not to break any eggs!

Then on Sunday the two Packs joined together again to do the first of the 3 Legs Challenge hikes from Glen Maye to St Johns. The weather was a little bit windy and showers were threatened but luckily they were only very small and light . We met at the Waterfall inn and had a nice walk down through the glen before heading along the coast, a bit blustery at times but the Cubs walked really well despite this. The Cubs walked very quickly and were able to have their lunch by Corrin’s Tower before a quick play on the beach. We then headed along the Heritage Way to St Johns where lots of tired Cubs were ready to be picked up!

Manannan Packs Maughold Camp

image

Over the 23rd-25th May Manannan Cubs help a camp in Maughold, camping in a field by the Venture Centre. On the Friday night cubs battled the rain to put up their tents before going on a short walk to the beach before heading up to Ramsey Scout Hall to watch a film. We then braved the night in the tents as the rain had cleared.

image

Saturday morning, a nice early start saw us head to the scout hall for breakfast before a playing in Mooragh park. We then headed back to the venture centre for the day’s activities. Before lunch everybody had a go at the assault course and on the zip wire. A few cubs got a soaking in the tunnels by Akela so it was then time to dry off before some hot dogs and soup for lunch. The afternoon started by everyone abseiling down the wall first and then the brave ones (including Mark!) tackling the tree. After this we split into 2 groups to do air rifle shooting and archery. Following the full day of activities it was time to head for our BBQ tea (even though it was raining!!!). After lots of burgers and sausages had been consumed we played a few more games and watched some more films. Lots of tired cubs fell asleep during the films so we headed back to our tents and fell asleep listening to the heavy rain outside.

Sunday morning started off much nicer with the weather though it was the day the cubs were going to get wet on the lake kayaking and canoeing anyway! After a later breakfast it was time to head out onto the lake, where cubs went around the lake and onto the island in the middle as well as playing some games in their canoes and kayaks. There were a few capsizes and falling in but good fun was had by all! After lunch it was time to head back to the campsite to pack away and take down the tents. After the site was clear the sun decided to come out so cubs had a good game of football together and then we headed back to Mooragh park where parents picked up lots of tired and happy cubs!

Manannan Cubs at Ardwhallan

image

Over the weekend 15. – 17. November, Manannan Cubs invaded Ardwhallan.  On Friday night after all the Cubs had arrived, we set off on a small hike to St Luke’s Church and did a treasure hunt around the Church Grounds all the Cubs imageappeared to still have lots of energy so we decided to take the long way back to Ardwhallan (we didn’t tell the Cubs this).  Once we were back at Ardwhallan, we watched some of the football on the TV and then watched Mr Bean before the Cubs went to bed.  Saturday morning was a nice and early start, after breakfast and inspection, the Cubs were split into 3 groups to do the following activities; archery, low ropes & challenge bases once all the Cubs had a go at all the activities we stopped for lunch.

imageAfter lunch the Cubs were split into 2 groups to do the following activities, orienteering and backwoods cooking, all the Cubs managed to do really well making their bread sticks.  After this we completed some challenges on the Assault Course, and then finished the afternoon with some Man Hunt games.  After tea it was a Movie night where most of the Cubs fell asleep during the film.

Sunday was a drizzly day, so unfortunately we were unable to do our planned activities and decided to go swimming instead at the NSC, all the Cubs spent about two hours in the pool before returning to Ardwhallan for lunch and prizes.  After this it was a quick tidy up at Ardwhallan before everyone returning home.

Manannan Cubs Geocaching

image

On Sunday 13th October Manannan Cubs embarked on a geocache hike starting at Groudle Beach car park and finishing at the Scout Hall. Akela explained that geocaching imagewas a worldwide treasure hunt and told the Cubs of different types of containers that were hidden. Whilst waiting for the final few to arrive Akela and Charlotte showed the Cubs how to use the geocaching app on their phones and the Cubs set off following the compass to find the first geocache of the day. After a bit of climbing and routing around the cache was soon found and treasure swapped. We then continued on our walk through Groudle and Molly Quirks Glen finding a couple more on the way. Cubs then decided they were hungry, so we walked along a footpath towards the reservoir where we sat eating our lunch, though it was very windy!

imageOn our walk around the top of the reservoir we bumped into the Group Scout Leader and Diesel on a walk and they joined us for our next find. We had chance for one last find of the day though it wasn’t where Akela had previously seen it, and where the GPS signal took us, thankfully our Young Leader had seen it further up the path so returned with the Cubs to it’s actual home. We then walked back to the Scout Hall, through the glen and had a quick game of non stop cricket before parents came to pick up. All Cubs worked well in following the compasses and searching for the treasure, the weather certainly helped too! A good day had by all.
