Scouts from both the Moddey Dhoo Troop and the Phoenix Troop took part in the Island Scout Camp over the 11. – 13. July 2014, at the Crossags Camp Site in Ramsey. The Icelandic Tents had been set up by the Explorers the previous night (thank you) so after sorting gear out, we walked down to Poyll Dooey where Flag Break took place and a Wide Game ran.
Back on site it was time for supper, before we walked up the hill behind the camp site to watch a firework display which was being put on for Ramsey Week. It was then time for bed.
On Saturday after breakfast and inspection (some of our Scouts seem to need some practice at tidying their kit) it was a day of activities. These included Gorge Walking, Kayaking, Raft Building, Backwoods Skills and Pioneering. Late in the afternoon a waterslide covered in foam was set up, which the Scouts enjoyed. After a BBQ Tea there was a Scavenger Hunt around the camp site, followed by a Camp Fire and then a Disco in the Ark, complete with foam tent.
On Sunday after breakfast and inspection we managed to get our tents down, once the light rain had died out and the sun and wind had dried the canvas. Then it was off for an hours swimming at the local pool. Lunch was served in front of the cabin and then it was time for Flag Down and a walk down to the meeting point to be collected by parents. A pretty good camp and our thanks go to the organisers for putting it on.
The 2014 Island Scout Camp (renamed Mann-Jam) will be taking place over the 11. – 13. July 2014 and will be based at the Crossags Camp Site in Ramsey. A full weekend of activities has been planned and ideas from Scouts have been taken on board too. It should be a great camp and hopefully everyone from both our Troops will wish to take part.
Below you will find the Camp Letter, Medical Form and Kit List. The Permission Slip, Medical Form and Camp Fee needs to be returned as soon as possible, as we need to let the organisers know our numbers by the 27. June 2014. Letters will also be available at the Scout Hall.
We had nineteen Scouts from the Moddey Dhoo and Phoenix Scout Troops attend the Island Scout Camp over the weekend of the 28. – 30. June 2013.
On the Friday the Scouts only had to put up one Patrol Tent, as two had been left up from the previous weekends Cub Camp. Flag Break was held at the Albert Tower, once the slow walkers and bits of flag pole had arrived. Back on site it was supper and off to bed for 22:30. The Scouts were all up again at 23:00 as fireworks started going off in Ramsey for the start of Royal Ramsey Week.
Saturday was a day of ticketed activities, which included Gorge Walking, Backwoods Skills, Kayaking, Pioneering, Raft Building, Archery, etc. In the early evening the Scouts took part in Orienteering before being entertained by a juggler. There was then a short camp fire and after supper a movie in the ‘ark’.
On Sunday the tents were taken down pretty early, as the afternoon forecast wasn’t great and then the Scouts headed off to swimming and bowling. Once back on site Flag Down was held before the Scouts headed off home.
A pretty good camp and we only had trouble from the midges on Friday night.
If they wish Scouts can bring their own hike tents to the Island Scout Camp next weekend. It is suggested however that Scouts practice putting the tents up and packing them away again beforehand. A small hike tent should only take about ten minutes to put up and not two hours. We will have plenty of tentage available for those Scouts who wont be bringing their own tent.
Final information is now available for those Scouts going on the Island Scout Camp. You can download it here.
