Chief Scout Bear Grylls, made a brief visit to the Isle of Man on the 11. May 2013. He arrived by helicopter at Peel Hill, jumped onto a mountain bike and rode with a couple of Explorer Scouts down hill to meet the Scouts at Fenella Beach who were getting ready to do Coasteering, Kayaking, Climbing and Backwoods Skills. He then walked across the footbridge to meet the Beavers and Cubs who were busy building sandcastles on the beach. The Chief was soon back in the air heading off to his next stop. It was a brief and chaotic visit, with lots of the general public following Bear around, but our members seemed to really enjoy meeting the Chief.
The annual all Island St. George’s Day Parade & Service was held on Sunday 21. April 2013. This year the event was organised by a small team of 2nd Onchan Leaders. The centre of Onchan came to a standstill as around 700 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Network and Leaders led by Onchan Silver Band paraded down School Road, along Main Road down Royal Avenue and onto Royal Drive, where they passed the saluting base manned by the Island Commissioner, the Island President and the Patron of the Scout Association – Isle of Man the Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood. Once in Onchan Park, the Service was held in front of invited guests and hundreds of parents. A short play depicting the story of St. George and the Dragon was put on my member of 2nd Onchan and the prayers were also led by the Group. All members of the Association renewed their Promises during the Service. The many Banners were judged by the Governor and the winners of the Victor Kneale Trophy were 1st Ballaugh. After the parade everyone got to go on the parks attractions at reduced prices courtesy of Onchan Commissioners.
As organisers we would like to thank all Island Groups for a fantastic turn out. The Scout Band who played so well, the members of the Group who who performed or read prayers, the local police for running the rolling road closure, Onchan Silver Band who provided the parade music, Onchan Explorer Scouts for doing so much and off course the Leaders of 2nd Onchan who have been working so hard to make the day a success.
We have thirty Cubs, Scouts and Explorers going on the Waddecar Camp, along with seven Leaders. Over the past few weeks we have been busy finalising the programme and booking activities. Some of the off site activities we have booked include two hours of skiing at Rossendale Outdoor Ski Centre (don’t worry if you can’t ski, instructors are provided). Two hours at climbing at the Preston Climbing Centre and two hours of Laser Tag with Pennine Battlefield Live.
Transport from the ferry to Waddecar and to all the offsite activities has been booked with a local coach company. We will be taking one vehicle with us, which will mostly be used for food shopping, but it’s always handy to have a vehicle on site.
We have extended our visit to Blackpool Pleasure Beach into the evening, which means we will have about nine hours in the park. Everyone will be provided with a Full Park Wristband, which will allow them to go on all park rides as many times as they wish.
During the camp everyone will be divided into different Patrols and each day we will have a different Duty Patrol to help the Leaders where necessary, such as preparing meals and tidying as required. Being in the days Duty Patrol, won’t mean any activities are missed.
Full payment of the camp is due by the end of May 2013, quite a few payments towards the camp have already been made, some in full. Please ensure that the Payment Card is sent in with any payment, so that a correct record can be made.
Final information including Medical / Activity Permission Forms, Kit Lists, etc., will be posted out to everyone mid June.
A spare place has become available on this summers Waddecar Camp. This is being offered on a first come first served basis. Further details can be found here
If you are going to Waddecar with us in the summer, visit our Facebook Page and vote on the colour of our Camp T-Shirt.
As 2012 is now in the past, Diamond Jubilee Badges which were given out last year to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, need to be removed from uniforms.
